Sammon Apartments
Rhythm and organization.
Located in Toronto's East York district, this project embodies the client's bold vision of revitalizing a neglected parking floor within a 1950s apartment building into four modernized apartments. Teaming up with Steven Fong Architect, we embarked on a journey to seamlessly integrate a fresh, playful design into the existing framework of the building.
Drawing inspiration from a "kit-of-parts" approach, our design breathes new life into the old garage space, infusing it with vibrant character that stands in striking contrast to the building's original aesthetic. Outside, we curated a visually striking facade, blending red brick with painted corrugated metal to create a dynamic, eye-catching ensemble. By maximizing window apertures, natural light floods the interiors, illuminating each apartment during the day. At night, the windows become lanterns casting a warm glow over the surrounding garden area.
Internally, our strategy focused on optimizing spatial efficiency without compromising on comfort. By strategically positioning washroom and closet areas to align with existing plumbing stacks, we minimized the need for extensive modifications, thus staying within budget constraints. This deliberate layout also resulted in expansive, open living spaces within each apartment, fostering an inviting atmosphere that challenges their compact footprint.
Our collaboration has breathed new life into this aging structure, transforming it into a vibrant hub of contemporary living. From the arresting exterior to the efficiently designed interiors, every aspect of this project reflects our commitment to innovation, functionality, and aesthetic excellence
